SIERRA COLLEGE ANNOUNCES “A WALK IN THE WOODS” WITH GREG HACKETT
“Every summer we went up to Yosemite for ten days, and that was an era when you could have breakfast, give your kids an apple and tell them to come back at 5 p.m. for dinner...They were happy days…I would get on my bicycle and see what ranger programs were being offered…we floated down the Merced River and did all sorts of activities.” - Greg Hackett
Hackett's childhood trips to Yosemite where he explored meadows and forests led to his career choice. Hackett, who grew up in Southern California, graduated from San Diego State University and went on to become a California State Park Ranger - a career he had until retiring after twenty-nine years. After twenty-two years working on the San Diego coastline, he was promoted to manage state parks in the Lake Tahoe Truckee region. His love for the outdoors and teaching translated into a very short retirement: Today he works as a full time ski instructor and, in the summertime, guides two hikes a day five days a week at Northstar California.
Hackett will be the guest facilitator for Sierra College Insights, an interactive and lively monthly series hosted by the Sierra College, Tahoe-Truckee campus on Friday, Sept. 13. The community is invited to participate in “A guided walk in the woods: Tips on how to share nature’s treasures.”
“Our walk on September 13 is less about pointing out specific plants and trees and more about how to share concepts that are relevant to both our region and places where your friends may be visiting from,” explains Hackett. “My philosophy is to share good guiding principles and discuss universal concepts.” Topics may include watershed, wildflowers and migration.
