Earth artist Andres Amador creates large scale art work in nature, and he's coming to the Sierra Nevada for this year’s Trails and Vistas Art Hikes at Spooner Lake on Sept. 6 and 7. In addition, art hikers will hear live musical performances, story telling and poetry and see innovative dances inspired by the natural world along the guided three mile long art hike in Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park.
Themed “Meadows to Mountains - A cultural journey,” the art hikes celebrate the environment through the arts. For example, Davis, CA based dancer Sonja Brodt, who founded Ecokinesis Dance Company, draws inspiration from her research career and American as well as Asian dance traditions. Guitarist Meri Superak, a multi-instrumentalist, will accompany Brodt with a piece inspired by Tahoe camping trip. There will be nearly a dozen original performances. The three hour long art hikes, which depart every 15 minutes from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., are recommended for physically healthy people accustomed to hiking at altitude. In addition to the art hikes, there will be an outstanding evening concert featuring prominent and celebrated musicians from near and far on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 6.
Independent pieces combine with collaborative works for Trails and Vistas World Concert, a fundraiser in the Shakespeare Amphitheater at Sand Harbor State Park. Scarlet Rivera, well known for her contributions to Bob Dylan, Indigo Girls and Tracy Chapman, will share current work as well as collaborate with flutist Ann Licater, InnerRhythms Dance Theatre and San Jose State University Symphony Orchestra. There will be folk music by Kurt Beckering and chants by Emily Tessmer of Orenda Blu culminating with the hop to your feet beats of SambaDa’. The World Concert offers even more than music. Aerialists from Tahoe FLOW Arts Studio will climb, twirl and spin on stage and muralist Susie Alexander will paint multiple pieces during the concert.
