Two years ago I received my first flip video via e-mail. Images of my Dad smoking bees appeared on the screen as my Mom’s voice narrated the action. Still shots came next.
My parents had discovered a new hobby and so began their journey with honeybees. Phone conversations started with bee trivia such as, “Did you know a single worker bee produces 1/12th teaspoon of honey in its lifetime,” or “You wouldn’t believe the special dance that bees do to communicate where - how far and in what direction - other bees should travel to collect nectar and pollen.”
I began to wonder if anyone in Truckee-Tahoe keeps bees. How could the inevitable existing challenges, namely the threat of mice, mites, moles, mold and plagues, compounded with long winters, short growing seasons, and wildlife inspire local beekeepers? Turns out a few passionate people are up to the challenge.
The idea for showing “Queen of the Sun: What are the bees telling us?” emerged after I read about the film, watched the trailer and found no scheduled local showings. Featuring informative interviews, magnificent images plus honey tasting, our honeybee event on Thursday, October 27 is a must for any curious community member, naturalist, foodie, or aspiring beekeeper. Please join us at Cedar House Sport Hotel at 10918 Brockway Road in Truckee. Discover, discuss and taste the sweet delights from healthy hives. The evening promises to be a good time. - Nicole
