Custom Learning Academy (CLA) takes a highly personalized approach to education by offering rigorous national standards-based curriculum tailored to the individual needs of students. CLA accepts all aptitude levels. The main filter is whether a student can follow the school’s strict behavior contract.
Today, CLA announced higher than grade level national standardized test scores across elementary and secondary grades. Every student at CLA is performing at or above grade level (see the data in the Press Room at www.customlearning.org).
“We’ve created a place where learning happens. We teach students how to learn in a supportive environment that promotes academic performance and self-esteem and fuels success in college placement and beyond,” explains Lisa Crosby, founder and director of CLA. Students’ academic performance combined with extracurricular offerings and a nurturing learning and teaching environment have led to an increase in full and part time enrollment since the school’s inception in 2005.
CLA measures success based on academic self-esteem and attitude as well as classroom performance and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS), a standardized test used by private schools nationwide to measure achievement across academic disciplines. CLA’s 2011-2012 Iowa composite scores show academic mastery exceeding grade level across all grades, and CLA attributes its’ astoundingly high national standardized test scores to the school’s attention to mastery of concepts, 10 to 1 student to teacher ratio, outstanding educators, and an involved executive director who collaborates with teachers and students on a weekly basis to guide success.
“Iowa scores have been stellar each year confirming our school’s rigorous and engaging 21st century design is working. Keep in mind, we accept students of all academic levels, but we do filter for the ability to adhere to our strict behavior contract,” shares Crosby.
“We purposefully keep classes small so teachers have the time and resources to address each student,” explains Crosby. She adds that it is common for students to enter CLA and soar above grade level standards within one to two years regardless of how they performed in the past.
There are a few spaces available for the 2012-2013 school year. Annual full time tuition, including all books, school supplies, four core academics plus a foreign language, art, music and physical education, is $11,000 for elementary students and $14,500 for secondary students. Families can begin the application process by meeting with Crosby. The CLA school year begins Sept. 4 - the Tuesday after Labor Day. Hallelujah for summertime!
