Interactive educational exchanges replace traditional lectures for monthly dean programming series at Sierra College, Tahoe-Truckee
Launched shortly after Dr. Kim Bateman became dean of the Sierra College, Tahoe- Truckee campus, the Dean Lecture Series gained a strong following by showcasing lectures by regional experts across disciplines. Rather than sharing information in a traditional lecture format, presenters will showcase inquiry based teaching techniques proven to promote thought, learning and discussion in the new monthly Sierra College Insights program.
Sierra College Insights is an interactive educational event series designed for inquisitive teens and adults. Each month an academic expert will facilitate an out of the ordinary presentation on the Tahoe-Truckee campus located at 11001 College Trail in Truckee.
The series will kick off with a focus on Truckee surroundings. Will Richardson, Ph.D. will lead a nature walk on Friday, Sept. 7. The Sept. 7 program begins with socializing and refreshments at 6 p.m. followed by a walk on campus grounds at 6:30 p.m. Richardson has been birding in the Tahoe area since 1994. Originally a migrating Tahoe resident himself, spending summers running crews for the Point Reyes Bird Observatory and working on the Farallon Islands off the coast of San Francisco in the fall, he settled in Truckee in 2001, and has been intensively studying the region's natural history and ecosystems ever since. He is working on a book about the birds of the Lake Tahoe basin and he has authored papers on chipmunks, butterflies, dragonflies, and his own discovery of the Tahoe basin's second species of salamander. Richardson received his Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology from the University of Nevada, Reno, studying bird communities in Sierra Nevada aspen habitats. Richardson is the director of applied science and co-executive director of Tahoe Institute for Natural Science,, an organization committed to advancing the natural history, conservation and ecosystem knowledge of the region through science and education.
The program will continue to be offered at no cost, however donations are encouraged and will serve as honoraria for the guest speakers. All collected donations will be given directly to the speaker on the night of the event.
“A hallmark of Sierra College’s Insights will be interactivity. Incredible instructors and experts in our community have been hand picked to share their expertise in an engaging and educational way that will appeal to many ages,” explains Bateman. She invites all community members to experience the new monthly series. “We are committed to engaging our whole community with diverse topics in a compelling format. Expect interesting conversations and an out of the ordinary experiences when you attend Sierra College Insights.”
