It's been a year since I've tried Gar Woods in Carnelian Bay. Gar Woods is a Tahoe tradition, a destination and, based on my experience Tuesday afternoon, a complete summer delight.
The restaurant has been in business for twenty-three years and boasts an expansive deck overlooking Lake Tahoe and famous Wet Woody rum punches. In the past, I've opted for the beer battered coconut prawns and chili relleno overflowing with scrumptious crabmeat stuffing served in a pool of marinara Diablo but this time I opted for a couple of new items and was not disappointed.

I’m sure I'll return to Gar Woods before the summer is over for the Crab Cake Sliders. The two crab cakes are thick, flavorful and crispy on the outside. They are served on warm Sisters Shubert’s buttermilk buns atop a few thinly sliced pieces of granny smith apple and fresh coleslaw and beneath a creamy remoulade. The accompanying black, kidney and garbanzo bean salad with surprising hints of marinated red pepper is a side worth savoring – a hint of vinegar, dash of fresh parsley and simply, delicious.

I also sampled a new addition to the drink menu that was just introduced by Manager Jeff Hill who began as a bus boy at Gar Woods nine summers ago. Try it - the not too sweet and quite refreshing Cucumber Vodka Mojito.
